The Territory

The Villa Pianciani complex was built on the summit of a high hill called “Il Monte”, overlooking the small village of Terraja, immersed in one of the most fascinating landscapes of Umbria. “Il Monte di Terraja” rises like a privileged terrace over a unique territory, still very well preserved and surrounded by centuries-old olive trees, sown fields that take on a thousand colors according to the seasons and ancient woods that contain a rich biodiversity.

The ancient descriptions of the villa speak in poetic tones of its privileged position: “… from which to admire both the valley and the nearby mountains, this enchanting panorama constitutes the magnificence of this sojourn.”

Around the hill, adorned with centuries-old olive groves and on which the villa rises majestically, extends the magnificent valley of Spoleto. This territory, which embraces an area of approximately 320 km², is located in the heart of central Umbria and develops between Spoleto and Perugia, representing one of the most picturesque and history-rich areas of the region, framed by the gentle slopes of the Umbrian Apennines.

The territory of the valley develops at an altitude that varies from 200 to 800 meters above sea level, offering an extraordinary variety of landscapes. The plain, predominantly dedicated to agriculture, hosts arable crops that follow the rhythm of the seasons, while the sunny slopes of the hills welcome what is considered the finest Italian olive cultivation. The gentle Umbrian hills, in fact, are the ideal place for the production of extra virgin olive oil of the highest quality, the result of knowledge passed down from generation to generation.

Once, in prehistoric times, this valley was an intermontane basin occupied by a lake. Today, far from the major industrial centers and main traffic arteries, the Spoleto valley has extraordinarily preserved its ancient landscape. Here, time seems to have stood still, offering visitors an oasis of peace and beauty, where unspoiled nature combines with history and traditions.

Spoleto Festival

The Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of Two Worlds) in Spoleto is one of the most important and long-standing Italian cultural festivals. It takes place every summer in Spoleto, a charming Umbrian town, and embraces a wide range of artistic disciplines: music, opera, dance, theater, visual arts and cinema.

The festival was founded by Gian Carlo Menotti, an Italian-American composer, with the intention of creating a cultural bridge between Europe and the United States — hence the name Festival of Two Worlds. Menotti wanted a place where artists of different nationalities and disciplines could collaborate and experiment.

Participating in the Spoleto Festival means immersing oneself in a total artistic experience, in a city rich in history, art and natural beauty.

Art Cities and Historic Villages of Umbria

These reliefs are the point of support for numerous historic villages, true jewels of Italian tradition, such as Assisi, with its spirituality and the legacy of Saint Francis; Trevi, known as the “capital of oil”; Montefalco, famous for the prized Sagrantino wine; and Spello, with its Roman walls and flowered alleyways. These historic centers, magnificently preserved, are the living testimony of a millenary history and offer visitors a timeless experience.

Spoleto, located not far away, adds further charm to the panorama. This city, known internationally for the Festival of Two Worlds, is a jewel of art and culture. Its cobbled streets lead to architectural treasures such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with its precious frescoes by Pinturicchio and Filippo Lippi, and the Ponte delle Torri, an imposing work of medieval engineering. Beyond its historical richness, Spoleto is also a place of great vitality, with markets, events and a cuisine that celebrates the excellence of Umbria, from truffles to fine wines.
