The Complex

On the road leading from Spoleto to Montefalco stands the Monumental Complex of Villa Pianciani: one of the most spectacular examples of noble country architecture in the Spoleto area and throughout Umbria. Built at the end of the 18th century by the Pianciani Counts, one of the oldest and most illustrious families in Spoleto since the early Middle Ages, the complex arose from the transformation of a pre-existing building into a sumptuous “Delizia di Terraja” (Terraja’s Delight). The project was entrusted to the young architect Giuseppe Valadier, destined to become famous for his subsequent design of Piazza del Popolo in Rome. The complex was built on the summit of a hill surrounded by olive groves, from which it dominates the entire Spoleto valley with a view that extends as far as Assisi. The villa enjoys a breathtaking 360-degree panorama, embracing the unspoiled beauty of the Umbrian hills, with their gentle profile and colors that change with the rhythm of the seasons. For its harmony and beauty, Villa Pianciani was long known as “La Delizia dei Pianciani“ (The Pianciani Delight) and still today embodies the perfect union of art, history and landscape.
